Olivia promises to fulfill her dying husband’s wish—to scatter his ashes around the world. Wading through grief and depression, she journeys to a remote orphanage in Uganda. Living amongst the children in their threadbare surroundings, Olivia develops a passion for humanitarian work as she tries to help stem the overwhelming presence of disease and poverty. She vows to fight for the children’s lives and she begins to fight for her own.

Just as time begins to heal the wounds of Olivia’s fragile heart, her world is shattered when she is involved in a violent encounter with an armed militia group in the picturesque mountains of Uganda. Olivia flees to the safety of Rwanda, where she learns the truth of her husband’s unimaginable betrayal.

As Olivia hovers on the brink of an emotional collapse, her broken soul is reawakened with a passionate new love—but her life is about to take another dramatic turn as she struggles to survive in a region left torn apart by civil war. It will take every ounce of Olivia’s courage to hang on to those she loves the most but it may come at a great cost to all of them.

I would highly recommend reading the author's notes before getting into the meat of the story. It makes it that much more poignant. Ms. Hotzon's descriptions of the setting were incredible, and I could tell she spent time in Africa. I felt as if I was right there with the characters, seeing, touching, and hearing the sounds of the jungle. At times I thought there was too much telling and not showing, which is why I gave it four stars. The characters were compelling and the plot interesting. There were times when I couldn't read the book, I wondered what was happening to the characters.

Hands Full of Ashes eBook Kim Hotzon Reviews

This is an intriguing story about one woman’s journey to fulfill a promise she made to her dying husband, but it becomes so much more than that. It becomes the story of Olivia finding herself and finding a new passion for her life.

Although listed as “spicy” as a heat level, there is only one sexual scene, and it is not descriptive. It is, however, pivotal to the plot of the story. It’s hard to go into detail without getting into spoilers, but suffice it to say that Olivia doesn’t always make the best choices in this story.

The story is told not only from Olivia’s POV but at times from different character’s POV as well. A few of those could have been left out without hurting the main plot, in this reviewer’s opinion. But, they were not enough of a distraction to take away from Olivia’s story.

There is one decision Olivia makes towards the end of the book that some readers might find questionable. It’s understandable given the circumstances and it’s very much in character with Olivia’s personality, but still made me raise an eyebrow. It was a hard decision.

Over all, the book was easy to read and gave me a new appreciation of Rwanda and Uganda and the troubles they have gone through. Good job.

When I picked up Hands Full of Ashes I didn't expect the emotional connection it created within the first few pages. With each chapter I became more immersed in the feelings of losing a loved one, the beauty of Africa, and the courage of survivors. I love a book that makes me think, feel, and wonder. Vivid imagery and detailed accuracy created not just pictures in my mind but a desire to learn more about the humanitarian work in Africa. A wonderfully touching story from beginning to end.
Do you remember that feeling when the curtain drops and you feel compelled to applaud? Well, I almost did when I finished reading this novel by Kim Holtzon.
I was planning on reading the book at a later date, but I decided to read the acknowledgements, which made me switch gears and continue reading. Moving from comfy Canada to Africa? This was something I could identify with, though it would turn many an eye.
Kim was able to take me on a journey -- actually in a short time frame -- where the main character was trying to recover from deep loss while facing almost more of the same but trying always to survive -- physically and emotionally.
The atrocities in Rwanda, which have been rampant throughout Africa were described realistically enough. The author also took a risky theme in incorporating an inter-racial relationship.
While some trans-cultural reads make me feel that I would like to visit the place, this was not the case for me. It takes people like Olivia and Jan.
BTW, the tree is the baobab. Though seeing referred to as "baobob" made me chuckle.
Beautiful, descriptive setting with powerful scenes and intense character portrayals. Suspense, action and romance all entwined to keep the reader on the edge of their seat as they immerse themselves in this amazing story.
Hands full of Ashes is a deep and emotional read from beginning to end. Miss Hotzon writes a story full of vivid description that’s both a testament to the beauty of Uganda and a heartbreak for the culture of poverty for which her heroine’s humanitarian efforts reach. The plot is full of angst and hope, loss and strength, tragedy and forgiveness. And of course romance and passion. A journey you won't want to put down. I’m looking forward to her next book!
