Mafiosa Blood for Blood CatherineDoyle 9781909489844 Books

By the time I reached the half way point of the book, I truly believed there would be a book four, as I couldn’t see how Catherine Doyle would resolve all the events with roughly 200 pages or so left. And, as I feared, the ending did have a rushed feel about it, rushed and even worse, not very realistic. [But what am I saying? This is a YA Mafia centric novel, so realism was never a part of this trilogy anyway].

Once again, I have to praise Millie, for me, the BEST character in the entire trilogy. To use a Britishism, she’s brilliant! I just loved her personality (loyal, fun, smart, determined) especially when compared to that of Sophie (drama queen, unrealistic boy/girl flirting topics, self-pitying, a real drip). Why oh why couldn’t the main character have been Millie?! That alone would have elevated the trilogy and earned more stars from this reviewer. But, we’re stuck with Sophie, who, especially in Mafiosa, seemed to act more like a mafia princess, than BE a mafia princess. I understand her character was still reeling from the events of the previous novel, but Sophie seemed to be all over the place here. She veers between living the life of a normal teen girl (school, school dance, boy drama, occasional bratty behavior) and that of a Mob “soldier” (vengeful, hate-filled, thoughts full of violence and weaponry). And in both, she fails. I never really felt Sophie belonged in either world. She wasn’t born into the Mafia life, so seemed to playact living in one. Then too, given her reality now, it was unbelievable having her continue to live the life of a normal girl. If Catherine Doyle wanted to portray a teen girl torn between two lives and two realities, she did a poor job of it.

I didn’t notice it in the first novel, but the British spelling of certain words (colour, favourite, tyre, etc.) makes me think the author is British. If so, it’s a huge FAIL for me that British spelling and expression (“you want to give at me”?!) was used in a clearly American setting, in this case, Chicago. Almost all the characters in this trilogy were American born and raised, so it really took me out of the book when encountering Britishisms in this trilogy. The publisher should have edited those parts precisely because the characters and setting were not in Britain. So like I said, FAIL.

Finally, although I liked the HEA ending, it was so eye-rollingly implausible, as well as utterly predictable. SPOILER! Did anyone doubt for one instance that M. Flores would turn out to be Evelina? C’mon, it was apparent the instant Sophie’s father told her she could go to Colorado and someone there would help her, that the “help” would turn out to be the long-missing wife of Felice.
Then too, of course I was rooting for Luca and Sophie to leave the Mob life and find their happily ever after fulfilling all their dreams, but the practical side of me says there’s no way that can happen given what transpired in Mafiosa. When Luca decided not to go on the yacht, his explanation to Sophie came across as very spur of the moment. So how exactly would he and Sophie live? Where is their income? How would they get jobs? Did Sophie graduate from high school? Did they need to obtain fake documents for their new lives? So many unanswered questions, all legitimate. But no, we’re treated to Sophie being surprised with tickets to see Phantom of the Opera as a birthday gift from Luca – and in Chicago no less! I always had the sense Sophie could do with more brain cells, but I didn’t think Luca would be dumb enough to ever return to the scene of the crimes(plural!). END SPOILER!

The final novel and the trilogy as a whole left me feeling unsatisfied. I wanted more, and better character development for Sophie and more realism in showcasing how people could break away from a violent lifestyle. The only reasons I’m glad I read this trilogy were Millie and Luca. Everything/one else was meh to crap. Ultimately, I can’t recommend this trilogy, even for Millie and Luca, fabulous as they were. These two weren’t enough to overcome the problems throughout.

Mafiosa Blood for Blood CatherineDoyle 9781909489844 Books Reviews

Loved this book just as much as the first one! It was an emotional journey with each of the characters. I was laughing one minute and crying the next. Really recommend you read this trilogy.
A mafia story that spans three books, and I loved every single one? Yes! I have never been a fan of mafia stories, so I have no idea how accurate of a portrayal this is, and I absolutely don't care. This is the best series that I didn't know was missing from my life.

Now I've come to the end, and I don't want to part with these characters. I certainly don't want to part with this author, and I hope she writes a new book soon. Wherever she takes me next, I'll follow her. Right now my mind is still on Sophie and Luca. Gianluca Falcone. Even his name is sexy. I'm trying to write this review without spoilers, but you have to ship her with Luca if you've read the other two books. So he's got a switchblade and a gun, and he can be lethal. That's where the comparison to the typical mafia tough guy ends. There is so much more to him. He's a glorious dream guy, but his personality is so real to me. Every scene he was in added depth to the story.

My heart is full after reading this book, because this love story is so beautiful. Even the sexy scenes were saturated with emotion. Fade to black for those who are concerned about that, but the level of violence reminds you that this is still a mafia story. This author really knows how to describe tense scenes with vivid details that put the reader right there in the action with Sophie. I enjoyed her training too, and her immersion into this world. Some of the characters that I previously wanted to punch in the face grew on me. Others remained despicable but entertaining.

Sophie got to be a bad ass! Not in the way I had imagined, but still someone who could hold her own. I loved how the author resolved most things. Others broke my heart, but everything fit with the story. There was only one small misstep at the end that I thought added unnecessary doubt, but I was otherwise very satisfied with the conclusion to the story. I highly recommend this series to all romance fans.
