Dare Book Two
Christophori Romanoff is an expert at being the perfect son for his homophobic father. But maintaining the facade comes with a heavy price, and when he swears off anonymous sex and getting drunk every night, he needs his friends more than ever. Only he’s convinced they’re busy with their own lives and better off without his interference. On the surface Chris is fine, but underneath the expensive suit and the law degree he got only to please his father, he’s breaking apart from the pressure, and he falls back on his oldest—and most dangerous—coping mechanism.
Samuel Mealamu hoped to hear from Chris soon after their last good-bye in Montana, but as the months go by without a word, he realizes what they started was one-sided. Still, he worries about the destructive path Chris was on and hopes the silence means he’s doing better. But nearly a year later, Chris finally calls, and it’s obvious he’s in trouble. Samuel thinks he’s seen Chris at his worst, but this new, far more broken man might be too much for even Samuel to help.

“My mind's a kaleidoscope, it thinks too fast, blurs all the colors 'til I can't see past the last mistake... I'm scared that you'll compare and I'll look a lifetime past repair... Self-disgust and selfishness take me everywhere I go. ... Try as I might to keep it together, why is recovery taking forever? … When the hope of morning starts to fade... I don't dare let darkness have its way... the hope of morning makes me worth the fight. I will not be giving in tonight.” ~ Icon For Hire (Hope of Morning)
For months Samuel, of 'Dare to Hope' by Kara Nash and Caitlin Ricci, waited for a call from Chris but it hasn't come. Just as Samuel accepts the fact that he overestimated the connection he feels with Chris, he gets a desperate call from Chris asking if he can come visit on the condition that no one else knows he's there. Samuel balks at keeping it a secret, but he hears how lost Chris sounds and, against his better judgement, he tells Chris to come to New Zealand.
Chris is a classic example of what can happen when a child lives to please his parents. His father controls his entire life. When Chris came out as gay, his father blamed his best friend, Bran. His father goes out of his way to demoralize Chris to keep him under his control. Even through it all, Chris tries his best to make his parents happy, even at the expense of slowly but surely destroying himself. After he meets Samuel, he stops being so self-destructive. Chris gives up drinking and casual hookups, desperately trying to regain his self-control and self-worth but it isn't enough. Chris knows Samuel is the only person who has ever made him feel safe, and he goes to him because this is what he really needs right now.
Chris has tried so hard to reclaim himself and be worthy of Samuel but he's been self-destructive for so long, he's having a hard time doing so. He's also so afraid of being deserted, like his parents have, that he finds it extremely hard to trust anyone, including himself. That is why, even with Samuel, he can't stop playing the game of push me pull me. One moment being vulnerable and the next flippant and indifferent. Chris has never had a loving relationship so he fears that if he shows any weakness at all with anyone, they will use it against him. All things considered, Samuel is a saint for putting up with him but he loves Chris and wants to help him if he can. The thing is, there's only so much he or anyone else can do for Chris rather than being there until Chris can believe in himself enough to want to try to be happy. When Bran finds out, he's angry but when he discovers that Chris has reverted to a method he hasn’t used since they were in high school he goes ballistic. They end up having a horrible fight; Chris leaves and goes back to New York thinking he's lost his friends forever.
The first book in this series was intense, but Kara and Caitlin have truly outdone themselves with this angsty, roller-coaster of a story. I became very emotionally involved with Chris wanting to alternately smack him for being such a smart aleck and pull him into my arms to protect him from the world. Samuel is patient, but he's also bullheaded and not as compassionate as he might have been as far as Chris's distress was concerned. At times, he expected more of Chris than he could give and became frustrated when he didn't get the reaction he expected. Though, in his defense, Chris redefined the term high-maintenance. Being with him was like walking through a mine field at times. This is not a standalone book. The series must be read sequentially since the history given in the first book is imperative to understanding the connections between the characters.
I recommend this book to those who are fans of the series. To those new to the series, if you like high-maintenance, intensive, sexy men, life in New Zealand, angst, and well earned happy endings, start with the first book in the series and catch up. Thanks, Kara and Caitlin, for the whirlwind of a ride.

This is the second book of this series. I am thinking that it could be a standalone, but I feel that there must be more background to the characters in the first book. Although I enjoyed this book, I think that I would have enjoyed it more if I read the first book, Dare to Risk. The Plot of this story is about the relationship between Chris and Samuel that started in book one. Chris is a successful divorce lawyer except in his father’s eyes. Chris is never good enough according to his powerful homophobic father. Stressed and disgusted with how his life is spiraling out of control, he gets on a plane to travel around the world to New Zealand to be with Samuel. (They met in Montana in book one and had a connection.) Samuel and Chris’s friends have a hard time accepting Chris’s way of coping with stress. This hurts Chris and he heads back to New York City and his empty, stressful life with his disapproving parents. Until Samuel turns up on his doorstep. There is some serious passion between Chris and Samuel. The Pacing is good, but again I suggest that you read the first book. Sad HEA. The character development in this book was good, but the story development I feel starts in Risk, book one.

Chris and Samuel. They met eight months before and Chris never called Samuel after that. They have a sort of story told in a 'Dare to risk #1' and there is a reason Samuel waited for Chris his action. I didn't read that one but after a while I sorted things out.
One lives in New York and the other in New Zealand.
After eight months Samuel gets a phone call from Chris. He wants to come over to sort things out. But it's a whole different story then 'sorted things out'
Let me begin to say they have a complicated relationship. It's not alone about two men because they have friends and they play a big part in this story.
Samuel gives many signals.....yes...no...yes...please....no...come here...go away... And Chris on his part didn't want to settle and does want to settle. It's a complete mess.
Well.....Chris was a complete mess. Wronged terrible by his awful parents.
And.....he has found a devastating way to release himself from the pain inside.
Their relationship is somewhat confusing (certainly for themselves)....one minute they talk about a 'together' another minute one talks about starting a company in another part of the world....and not together..
They are in their thirties and really immature. Running away, slamming doors, shouting names.
No clear decisions were made. All confusing.
Chris feels he never can be enough for Samuel in this state of mind and Samuel thinks Chris will never make up his mind about staying or leaving. They have it hard to bond.
All the friends have a inflammable relationship together. From fighting to loving.
But after struggling for ages they finally get what they want.
A somewhat chaotic read with lots of dialogue and plenty of disagreements.
The core was good, the characters made it entangled, explosive and combustible.
A good read with lots of dynamic.
